There is a tremendous amount of discussion this year in provincial and local government circles about food security, food systems, and agriculture. Small diversified farms are not well represented in these discussions which means that the needs and concerns of the majority of farms on Vancouver Island may not be properly considered and addressed. The resulting policy changes will affect our farms and impact what we can and cannot do on our land.
The Cowichan Agricultural Society (CAS) Advocacy Committee is inviting the Vancouver Island farming community to come together to engage in these issues so we can offer a unified perspective and help inform policy and regulatory changes that will have a positive impact on our farms.
We invite you to join us for engaging discussions regarding:
Overview of ag policy discussions and details on how farmers can get involved;
Specific provincial and local government policies, regulations and bylaws; and
Challenges and barriers that farmers are facing and opportunities for improvement.
As a result of the meeting, the CAS Advocacy Committee will provide a summary document that will be shared with local governments, Agricultural Lands Commission, and various provincial ministries.
We know it's hard for farmers to find the time to participate in these stakeholder engagement processes but we hope that you will make time to attend this important discussion.
Light snacks and refreshments will be provided.
